My Calling on the Dance Floor

Sister Elena

I am 81 today and, sitting in my comfortable rocker, I reminisce.  What are my memories?  Are there any regrets?  What are my impressions of those years gone by?  Who set my heart on fire for the deprived child?  Can I paint a picture of those early days of my life?

I rock for awhile and let my mind paint the pictures.  I had a sickly beginning, but I was cared for by loving parents and helpful siblings.  Memories of my school days flash through my mind, with pictures of faithful friends, much laughter, music, a touch of drama, a love of learning, and teenage difficulties.

In my senior year of high school, I was dancing with my boyfriend and I looked at my peers enjoying themselves.  I wondered if there wasn't more to life than this.  A seed was sown.

Eventually, I was to embrace religious life, and I have never regretted my choice.  Although there have been difficult moments, God has always been there for me.

The days of old still fill me with happiness, for our Mother Foundress was the one who set my heart on fire with a passion for the needy.
