An Overnight Call

"When I made First Profession, my first time to give myself totally to God, it was the happiest day of my life."

I remember in lower grades thinking of religious life. It was all because of one of my first teachers. She had a great love for the missions and she gave us that same love. We all wanted to go to Africa to help poor people. It was not long after we left the class that we forgot the missions, and the desire to be a sister left my mind as well.

During high school I was a member of the Sodality of Mary. We were highly encouraged to make a retreat before graduating. In my senior year I finally decided to make that retreat, after much coaxing from the principal of the school. The retreat was in December, and it was at that time I was sure I had a vocation.

When I returned home, I told my mother and some of my friends. They all gave me three months at the most. I was, and still am, a person who likes people and a party. All through high school, it was a party, and every Saturday night it was the dance at St. Jean’s Hall. However, I had experienced such peace, calm, and goodness from all the sisters that I had to join them.

I continued my regular way of life and prepared for my entry on September 3, 1956. When I left home, there was not much crying, for everyone was sure I would be returning very shortly. To the surprise of friends and family, I have persevered with the grace of God.

When I made First Profession, my first time to give myself totally to God, it was the happiest day of my life. I soon found out that God is never surpassed in generosity. Daily I ask the Lord to teach me to be generous, to give without counting the cost, and to communicate love and goodness to whomever I meet.
